The Judge arrives at Shire Hall

The Shire Hall was the very grand building in Brecon which was used for the legal and official affairs of the county throughout the Victorian years.
The most important occasions were the regular Assize Courts, which dealt with serious criminal cases.

The old Shire Hall in Brecon is now the home of Brecknock Museum
and Art Gallery

When the Assizes were in session the Judge would travel in great style from his official residence in the town to the steps of the Shire Hall in this splendid carriage.
His ceremonial retinue included trumpeters and javelin men, seen here lined up on the steps of the building.
