An honest schoolmaster
Among the papers of the Lewis Lloyds of Nantgwyllt at the Powys County Archives is a will of a John Davies of Middlesex who in 1691 leaves the rent of a local property to provide an "honest Schoolmaster whoe shall constantly keepe Schoole at Rayader".

This is one of the earliest references to schools in the area. We know from the Trade Directories there were other schools in the town in th early 19th century but few records survive. It is with the arrival of church and then state education that we learn more about school life in the area.

The coming of schools to the town and surrounding area, and the education they offered dramatically changed the lives of most of the local people, and many new possibilities came their way.
