Walter de Winton is now married, with a son, also Walter. The household has increased enormously - there are now 19 servants living in, including 6 grooms. Since they do not appear in other censuses, it is probable that this is an example of the enumerator being very thorough. The grooms probably lived above the stables and had not been visited in previous years. A new stable block was built in 1879, but the current one was obviously big enough for a large number of horses. Samuel Goode (1) is now a groom, as are two of the Lane boys from the Lodge, Richard (3) & John(4). Again, the servants come from all over England, as well as Radnorshire & Breconshire. One Kitchen Maid even comes from Ireland. Interestingly, amongst all these servants, there is no Cook. Perhaps she was on holiday, or lived out, in the village. There is also no Valet, but an entry elsewhere supplies one (though he could have worked for one of the other big houses in the area):

A fourth child has been born at the Lodge. 2 sons are working as Grooms at the Castle. Sarah Lane has presumably married and had a daughter, also Sarah. Note the age of the ‘Nurse’ employed to look after her.
