Ten paupers to feed

  A large family of the poor
Among the many records of the actions of parish Overseers of the Poor in seeking the removal of paupers to another parish, the extract shown below from the Quarter Sessions is notable only for the number of names included on the document.
No doubt the officials of Llanfyllin were particularly anxious to see the back of so many potential charges upon the parish poor rate.

The extract shown, from the Session Rolls of the Montgomeryshire Quarter Sessions, reads as follows:
"Upon the Complaint of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Llanfyllin aforesaid, in the said Borough of Llanfyllin unto us whose Names are hereunto set and Seals affixed, being two of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said Borough of Llanfyllin and one of us of the Quuorum that John Thomas Joiner Anne his Wife John their Son of about the age of seventeen years Anne their daughter of about the age of fifteen years, Mary their Daughter of about the Age of ten years, Elizabeth their daughter of about the Age of nine years Humphrey their Son of about the Age of eight years, Sarah their Daughter of about the Age of five years, David their Son of about the Age of one year, and Eleanor their Daughter of about the Age of six months have come to inhabit in the said Parish of Llanfyllin not having gained a legal Settlement there, nor produced any Certificate owning them to be settled elsewhere, and that the said John Thomas Anne his Wife and their said Children are likely to be chargeable to the said Parish of Llanfyllin...."
