The evil effects of a wicked habit
Glossary

Another mention of 'corporal punishment' or caning appears in this entry from the Ynscedwyn school Log Book or diary from 1882. Two boys from the school had been caught stealing gooseberries from a nearby garden.

Inflicted upon - to lay on punishment.

This was written in June 1882:
"Received a complaint this afternoon that two of the school boys had been stealing gooseberries in a garden in College Row. Inflicted corporal punishment on both and tried to show to the school the evil effects of such a wicked habit..."

The 'corporal punishment' here would have been a flogging with the head teacher's cane in front of all the other children.
