Victorian school life
A very sad New Year at Coelbren

The three entries shown on this page were written in the diary of Coelbren School within just ten days at the very end of 1895 and the beginning of 1896.

31st December
1895
7th January
1896
8th January
1896

These Log Book entries read:
31st December - "I have given one day's holiday being New Year's day tomorrow and a little child from school's funeral".
7th January - "My children are decreasing in number daily owing to a fever known [as] Diptheria being in the place".
8th January - "I find that one of my pupils is dead owing to the above fever".
These extracts show just how terrible infectious diseases could be in Victorian times.

Another death at Ynscedwyn School...
