Presteigne
in Victorian times
The old Market Hall and Assembly Rooms

This picture, like some of the others in this series, is taken from an old hand-coloured postcard which would have been sold to visitors as a reminder of the town.
These are made from black and white photographs coloured with special inks, so the colours sometimes look rather dull.

The photograph shows the old Market Hall at the top of Broad Street, pictured around 1900. The building was put up in 1862 to provide a meeting place upstairs and an open market space underneath.
In the early 1900's Presteigne's fire engine was kept in the ground floor of this building, and today it houses the library.
