In New Radnor School in 1885 a tragedy occurred as a result of illness. The Head teacher recorded this in the school's log books.

The sad entry reads:
"A scholar - Lucy Lloyd - died yesterday aged 12. This is only the fifth scholar who has died out of this school since Sept[ember] 1872."

Note that the Head records that poor Lucy is only the fifth to die in 13 years at the school !
We would be horrified today if any school in the area lost five children like this.
The sad truth is that in Victorian times many working families lost at least one child to disease.
