Plans for a new Lock-up in Presteigne
The official records of the Quarter Sessions held in 1843 include Quarter Sessions entryplans for a new Lock-up House for Presteigne. The building was to be built...
" a proper workmanlike and substantial manner ... on a piece of land near the Gaol in the said Town of Presteigne..."

Quarter Sessions entry

The "Lock-up" was a small but solidly built structure, usually made of stone or brick, which was used in small towns over many years to hold people who had been arrested for a crime.
Lock-ups were only meant to secure these people for a short time until they were moved to gaol or until their cases were examined by the court.
