Presteigne
in Victorian times
  The girls of Greenfields School

This picture is a bit blurred, but it is interesting because there are not very many early photographs taken inside the classrooms of Victorian schools. Most pictures that we usually see are of the children arranged in rows outside the school to have their photograph taken.
The children here were from Greenfields School, which was next to the churchyard of Presteigne parish church.

This was a girls' school which opened in 1850 and provided a good standard of education for local children until 1929, when the pupils were transferred to the National School.
These young ladies have obviously been asked to sit up straight with their hands behind their backs for the photographer !
