Older children in the infants class

In the early years there would often be older children, who had never been to school, in the same standard as the infants.
At Evancoyd school in February 1877 the Headmistress records the case of a boy of 13 sitting with the infants.

The entry reads:
"I admitted Isaiah Lloyd, a lad of 13, this morning & I am sorry to say that he does not know the alphabet."

In 1878 a young man of 17 who was very keen to learn to read entered the school and sat with the lower standards!
