The photograph below shows us a typical small shop as they were to be seen in villages and country towns all over Britain.
In this case it is a grocer's shop in Arthur Street, Montgomery around 1900.

Powell's shop was well known at the time for its home-made "fourpenny cake".
Young Edith Powell who grew up at the shop remembered how she hated grinding the coffee by hand in the grinder. It made her arm ache!
