Montgomery and district
in Victorian times
  A summer outing, Broad Street

This photograph was probably taken just after Queen Victoria's reign but it shows a scene little different from similar events in the 1890s.
You can see people dressed in their Sunday best climbing into decorated farm carts for some sort of outing.

Picture by kind permission of the Old Bell Museum,
Montgomery Civic Society

Notice that many of the ladies in the picture are carrying umbrellas to keep the sun off them. This was partly because people used to wear many layers of clothing even in summer, and would get hot quickly. Partly also it is because they wanted to avoid a tan which many thought vulgar.
