Slaters directory: Inns of the area, 1858
  extract from Slater's directory

This extract from Slater's Directory lists the inns and public houses of the area.

Travelling around the area in 1858 was still done by horse-drawn transport, so inns and hotels were needed for overnight stops.
A posting house (like the Dragon Inn, seen below) was an inn where coaches made scheduled stops and travellers could stay.

The whole area was dotted with small public houses - even some small villages had several. Working men often had such hard and miserable lives in Victorian times that many of them escaped to the pub when they could.
