Slaters directory: Inns of the area, 1858 |
This extract from Slater's Directory lists the inns and public houses of the area. Travelling around the area in 1858
was still done by horse-drawn transport, so inns and hotels were needed
for overnight stops. The whole area was dotted with small public houses - even some small villages had several. Working men often had such hard and miserable lives in Victorian times that many of them escaped to the pub when they could.
