The page extract shown below is taken from a printed List of Paupers, which runs to more thanList heading15 pages, of poor people receiving help "In Money" or "In Kind", from the parishes covered by the Pontardawe Poor Law Union in 1877.
It is a depressing record of distress experienced by large numbers of people at this time, with the causes of need including physical and mental illness, old age, and the desertion of husbands.
