Fire Brigade 3
A fire at the Lion

Fire at the hotel
In 1907 the local Volunteer Fire Brigade faced a much greater challenge when the Lion public house in High Street caught fire in the small hours.
Fire at the Lion, 1907
As can be seen in the above photograph, despite the best efforts of Captain T. Smith and his two appliances, the volunteers could not prevent the gutting of the hotel itself. They were however successful in preventing the destruction of the neighbouring premises. The appliance (right) appears to be still of the hand-pumped variety and the firemen did well to prevent the entire row of timber buildings from being engulfed.

Demonstration, 1910

This photograph, taken in 1910, shows the team giving a demonstration in Broad Street, and gives an impression of what the struggle at the Lion must have been like.
