Aims
To provide a focal point for
the study of local history within the rural communities of Powys
through the use of the Internet.
To promote the use of information technology across the county.
To publicise the history and culture of Powys to an international
audience, and to encourage tourism.
Objectives
To produce six complete multimedia archives websites
in English and Welsh by 31 May 1999, accessible via the Powys
County Council internet pages, one for each of the following
towns: Machynlleth, Llanidloes, Rhayader, Presteigne, Hay-on-Wye,
and Ystradgynlais.
To produce supplementary materials for use by local communities
and schools, in the way of hard copy facsimiles, exhibition materials,
study aids, etc
Indicative Content
Each multimedia archives website is to contain information covering
the following topics at the minimum:
A history of the community from earliest times to the present
day.
Religion (established church and nonconformity).
Education.
Crime and punishment.
Treatment of the poor.
Biographies of eminent local characters.
Local buildings.
The local landed estates and families.
Types of records.
It is expected that the following types of records
will be included in the above topics:
Contemporary and historical mapping.
Contemporary and historical photographs,engravings, paintings
and other images.
Sound and video (oral history) clips.
Archival documents held by the County Archives Office, the County
Museums and other repositories as appropriate, with transcripts.
Images of artefacts held by the County Museums and other repositories
as appropriate.
Background information will also be necessary to support the
individual web sites, as follows:
A glossary of unfamiliar words and phrases.
An explanation and history of each territorial unit (county,
hundred,etc)
referred to.
An explanation and history of each administrative unit (poor
law union, district council, etc) referred to.
Background historical material to place local events in context.
Links to websites with related material.
Information on the towns at the present day, with full acknowledgement
to all individuals who contributed to the project. |
