  * Marital status is also given in this census, all the above were single, except Charles Rawson, who was a widower. Since Emily de Winton is described as ‘daughter’, the head of the household must be Julia de Winton, whose husband had died in 1840. Charles Rawson is said to be the brother in law of the head of the household - he presumably married Frances Collinson. If so, the marriage, birth of 4 children and her death all took place in the space of 10 years. 3 of the children were born in Cumberland, so the Rawsons may have lived in Cumberland until the death of the mother; then, perhaps, Charles was given the Land Agent’s post so that the children could be with their aunts - assuming that Emily Collinson is resident at Maesllwch, and does not just happen to be visiting at the time of this census as well as the last. However, since the Governess is described as a visitor, perhaps the Rawsons are not permanent residents.
There are 7 servants living in, this time their precise positions in the household are set out. Interestingly, though the servants are listed after ‘the gentry’, the Governess is listed third - showing that although she was an employee, she was not thought of as a servant. The Nurse comes from Cumberland, presumably taken on when the family lived there. One of the housemaids comes from Co Durham, so perhaps also came with the Rawson family.

2 more children have been born to the Goode family at the Lodge since 1841. Samuel Goode (1) is now living at the castle, working as an errand boy. Eliza Goode (2) is, at 15, already working as a dressmaker. It appears that the younger children are not at school.
